The Snick- Queanbeyan Cricket – 150 years strong......

As we approach the 150th anniversary of the Queanbeyan Cricket Club, we take a look back at the incredible history behind the baggy blue cap.

Steeped in tradition and with a glorious list of achievements, the oldest cricket club in the region proudly looks back over the past 150 years and reflects on the good times and the struggles.

In each edition of The Queanbeyan Age over the next five months, we will reach into the archives. We’ll feature past champions and reacquaint the Queanbeyan community with stories of great deeds, great men and some cracking stories.

From the days of travelling two days by horse and cart to meet arch rivals Braidwood where the match lasted a day but the celebrations lasted much longer.

Or more recently to the SCG earlier this year where our mighty lads held the SCG Cup aloft to mark their success as the best team in country NSW.

Queanbeyan has always nurtured some of the region’s finest talent, from local juniors Brad Haddin and Mark Higgs, to the flamboyant and swashbuckling Tom O’Connor and his all-conquering team from the late 1920s and 30s. We will take the time recount the feats of some of the great players of the ilk of Neil ‘Legend’ Bulger, the late Terry Freebody and Gary Samuels.

And we’ll also ensure performances such as the 339 scored by current President Peter Solway in 1989-90 and the 246 scored by Clarrie Hincksman back in 1926-27 are remembered in this, the anniversary year of one of the oldest cricket clubs in Australia.

At the same time we will not gloss over the current team and their heroics as they have amassed three consecutive premiership trophies. It would be impossible to mention every champion player or list the officials who have carried the club to its successes and steered it through its struggles.

However we will try to deliver a cross section of those who left an indelible mark on the competition, the community and the great game of cricket.

The culmination will be the Anniversary Dinner to be held in February 2013, officially marking the club’s 150th Anniversary.
