Rd 3 Mixed Bag for Qbn Women’s teams
The Queanbeyan Premier League squad comfortably chased the Lord Taverners score of 154 last weekend to register their second win of the season.
Vanessa Picker, 18, was the star of the Queanbeyan side's win last Saturday, scoring a season-high 71 runs off only 60 balls after opening the batting and taking a wicket at a crucial time to halt Lord Taverners run rate.
Picker has been included in the ACT Meteors development squad this season, and Baker said that with strong performances she could break onto the national league as early as next year.
``With performances like that on the weekend, she will go a long way to making people take notice,'' he said. ``Provided she can maintain consistency she can expect to break into the Meteors squad by next year which is a fantastic achievement.''
``We have a young side but some of our more experienced players will have no problems helping them through and making sure we return at the top of our game.'' Baker said the young side had been galvanised by the inclusion of experienced players Charlotte Anneveld and Georgia Ellwis this season.
``Those players really give the younger players something to model themselves on,'' he said. ``Last year the side was very new, and this year with that little bit more personal experience as well as the experience of the senior players, they are beginning to come together.''
Glenda Hall's Queanbeyan squad were not as successful last weekend as their premier league counterparts, going down to Tuggeranong by seven wickets. Qbn scored 5/91 and Tuggeranong were 3/95 after there 20 overs. Baker said that while he was disappointed with the result, he was more interested in the development of his players in the early stages of their careers.
